वि सं २००७ सालको सशस्त्र क्रान्तिमा सहभागी भएर ३२ दिन जेल वसेकी उनी २०१५ को प्रथम आम निर्वाचनमा डडेल्धुरा क्षेत्र नं ६९ बाट नेपाली काँग्रेसको उम्मेद्धवार थिइन । त्यो चुनावमा प्रतिश्पर्धा गर्ने र जित्ने उनी एक मात्र महिला उम्मेद्धवार हुन् । महिलाले राजनीति गरेको नरुचाउने समाज थियो । विरोधीले उनको क्षेत्रमा पेटीकोटलाई भोट नदेऊ भन्ने नारा समेत लगाए ।
दलीय आधारमा पहिलो पटक भएको त्यो निर्वाचनमा कुल १ सय ९ सदस्यकालागि मतदान भयो । नेपाली कांग्रेस ७४ स्थान जितेर सबैभन्दा ठुलो दल बन्यो ।
राष्ट्रिय गोरखा परिषद्ले १९, संयुक्त प्रजातन्त्र पार्टीले ५, नेपाल कम्युनिष्ट पार्टीले ४, प्रजापरिषद ९घन कोदोलो०ले २ र प्रजापरिषदले १ स्थानमा जिते भने ४ स्वतन्त्र उम्मेदवार विजयी भए ।
चुनावमा जम्मा ७ महिला मैदानमा थिए जस मध्ये सबैलाई चकित पार्दै फराकिलो मत अन्तरमा जित्ने द्वारिकादेवी ठकुरानी मात्र भइन । डडेल्धुरा क्षेत्र नं ६६ मा प्रतिश्पर्धा गरेकी उनले
पार्टी संयुक्त प्रजातन्त्र पार्टीका लक्ष्मीदत्त भट्टलाई पराजित गरिन । ठकुरानीले ३ हजार ९ सय २ र भट्टले १ हजार ८ सय ३१ मत पाएका थिए । यसरी नेपालको इतिहासमा पहिलो पटक महिला संसदमा निर्वाचित भएको इतिहास उनले रचिन ।
संसदको चुनाव सम्पन्न भएपछि सरकार बनाउने प्रकृया शुरु हुनु पर्ने तर कसैको पनि वहुमत नआउने आंकलनका साथ चुनाव गराएका राजा महेन्द्र नेपाली कांग्रेसको दुई तिहाई वहुमतबाट तर्सिका थिए । त्यसैले चुनावी परिणाम घोषणा भएको तीन महिनासम्म राजा महेन्द्रले सरकार गठनका लागि आव्ह्रन गरेनन् । अन्तत २०१६ साल बैसाख २२ गते मन्त्रीपरिषद्का अध्यक्ष सुवर्णशमशेर राणाको ललीता निवासमा कांग्रेस संसदीय दलको बैठक भयो, निर्वाचित एक मात्र महिला सदस्य द्धारिकादेवी ठकुरानीको अध्यक्षतामा । त्यही बैठकले बीपी कोइरालालाई दलको नेता र सुवर्णशमशेरलाई उप नेता चयन ग(यो । त्यसपछि राजाले बीपीलाई सरकार गठनका लागि आव्ह्रन गरे । अनी २०१६ साल जेठ १३ गते बीपीको नेतृत्वमा मुलुककै पहिलो जननिर्वाचित सरकार गठन भयो । ११ सदस्यीय मन्त्रीमण्डलमा द्वारिकादेवी उपमन्त्री वनिन् । उनलाई स्वास्थ्य र स्वायत्त शासन मन्त्रालयको जिम्मेवारी दिइएको थियो । यसरी उनले दक्षिण एसियामै पहिलो महिला मन्त्री भएको इतिहास पनि रचिन ।
त्यति बेला दुई सदनात्मक संसद थियो । तल्लो सदन प्रतिनिधिसभामा द्धारिकादेवी र माथिल्लो सदन महासभामा राजावाट मनोनीत कमल राणा मात्र महिला सदस्य थिए । राणा, सत्तारुढ दल नेपाली कांग्रेसका उम्मेद्धवार डीके शाहीलाई पराजित गरी महासभाको उपाध्यक्ष भइन । उनी पनि नेपाल मात्र होइन, दक्षिण एसियाकै संसदमा उपाध्यक्ष हुने पहिलो महिला हुन् ।
